Threats of Artificial Intelligence on National Security

By Tahseen Wsu Abdullah

National security faces many threats and risks associated with the development of artificial intelligence technologies and tools that may affect global stability despite the many benefits associated with the use of artificial intelligence technologies. Many countries compete to develop artificial intelligence systems and enact legislation and laws to regulate its use and test, evaluate and verify large-scale artificial intelligence models.

Nick Bostrom (1973- ), an artificial intelligence expert at Oxford University, says superintelligence is intelligence that “substantially outperforms the best human minds in almost every area, including scientific creativity, general wisdom, and social skills” on June 2, 2023.

National security faces a range of new risks that could increase global instability, in addition to conflicts, as the widespread access to artificial intelligence (AI) poses new threats. The 2024 edition of the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report ranks the most severe threats in the short term and provides a long-term view of the risks expected over the decade. The report points to three major changes from 2024, all related to the spread and potential misuse of generative AI, misinformation and disinformation, negative consequences of AI technologies, and the concentration of technological power on January 13, 2024, as the most prominent risks

Artificial Intelligence Impacts Information Security: The risks and threats of artificial intelligence to countries are multiple, as it increases the spread of misleading information, may generate false information that could destabilize countries, and generative artificial intelligence raises concerns about the increase in false content online.

The impact of artificial intelligence on cybersecurity: By exploiting some flaws or loopholes in artificial intelligence systems, cyber-attacks can be launched that disrupt the vital infrastructure of developed countries, or steal their sensitive data on June 11, 2023. Artificial intelligence-based cyber operations will be significantly more aggressive, targeted, and effective in the future, whether in denial-of-service attacks, malware, ransomware, or phishing.

Synthesis of pathogens and epidemics: Artificial intelligence devices may in the future be able to synthesize pathogens and epidemics, or hack sensitive infrastructure on August 16, 2023, as warnings grow about overestimating the benefits of using artificial intelligence for health purposes.

Extremist groups exploit artificial intelligence: Extremist groups train chatbots on artificial intelligence (AI) to spread terrorism and extremist content and reproduce online accounts in response to their accounts being closed for security reasons.

Economic Security: A report on June 14, 2023, stated that artificial intelligence could replace the equivalent of (300) million full-time jobs in the future, as some tasks and jobs are automated around the world. According to the report, artificial intelligence technologies will perform the tasks of (25%) of jobs in the United States and Europe.

In the end, So, we can say national security has faced a range of risks since the use of AI tools and systems, such as the impact on information security, cybersecurity, the creation of pathogens and epidemics, and the exploitation of AI tools by extremist groups, which has contributed to global instability.
