Theater artist Ahmed Salar was born in Sulaymaniyah on June 20, 1947. He completed his elementary, middle, and high school education in Sulaymaniyah. He began writing creative works at the age of fourteen. In 1967, after receiving his degree from the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad, he worked at Kurdish Radio in Baghdad. In 1970, he founded the Student Art Group, and in 1971, the radio station appointed him as head of the Drama Department. He graduated from the Baghdad Academy of Fine Arts’ theater program in 1972 and established the Theater Pioneers Group in 1973.
In addition to founding the Salar and Pioneers art organizations, he made significant contributions to the field of art. In 1977, he received the Best Director award at the Iraqi Art Festival. He was an instructor at Sulaymaniyah’s Institute of Fine Arts from 1980 until 1991. In 1984, he created the Salar Theater Group.
When Kurdistan Television in Sulaymaniyah was established in 1991, he was appointed director. In 1992, he joined the Kurdistan Regional Government as the Deputy Minister of Culture; however, he left the position the same year to serve in the Kurdistan Parliament’s inaugural session.
In 1999, he became the head of the Kurdistan Artists Syndicate, and in 2005, he became the president of the Kurdistan Artists Organization and the owner of Theater Magazine, which is associated with his group, the Salar Theater Group.
Ahmed Salar has created 200 works of art, written over 36 plays and 40 books, 24 of which are related to theater. In addition to acting, directing, and writing in hundreds of theater productions, he has also been involved in various drama and film projects. He has received numerous honors from both Iraq and the local community.
