Erbil Neighborhoods Move Toward 24-Hour Electricity

A growing number of neighborhoods in Erbil are now receiving 24-hour electricity as part of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) ongoing efforts to improve power infrastructure. The Ministry of Electricity has confirmed that the initiative, known as the Light Project, will soon expand to other cities in the Kurdistan Region.

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani visited the Shadi neighborhood in Erbil to announce the expansion of the project. The Light Project aims to provide uninterrupted electricity across the entire Kurdistan Region.

As part of the project’s latest phase, four additional neighborhoods in Erbil—Nishtiman, Raperin, Nawroz, and Mardin—will receive 24-hour national electricity. This expansion will benefit approximately 14,000 subscribers in the city.

To date, the initiative has already provided 24-hour electricity to 13 neighborhoods in Erbil, serving 51,000 subscribers. These neighborhoods include Shadi, New Bahari, Naznaz, Bakhtiari, Sarbasti, Kuran, Kurdistan, Majidawa, Rizgari, Bahar, Krekaran, Azadi, and Rasti.

With the addition of the new neighborhoods, a total of 17 neighborhoods and approximately 65,000 subscribers, or around 250,000 citizens, will benefit from the project in Erbil.

In addition to the progress in Erbil, technical work for the project has begun in the cities of Sulaymaniyah and Dohuk. Once complete, several neighborhoods in both cities will also have access to 24-hour electricity.

According to the Ministry of Electricity, the Light Project has already led to the shutdown of 350 private generators across the region. This has resulted in a range of benefits, including a cleaner environment, reduced noise pollution, simplified billing through a single electricity bill, and full voltage without limitations on amperage.

As the project continues to expand, officials say the Kurdistan Region is on track to provide reliable, continuous electricity to all its residents.
