Fellaw lake attracts global travelers year-round

Fellaw Lake, located in the Balakayati neighborhood of Choman district, roughly 160 kilometers northeast of Erbil, stands out as a captivating destination that draws both locals and international visitors year-round. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty, the lake’s appeal remains strong throughout all four seasons, making it a favored spot for nature enthusiasts and tourists alike.

The lake’s charm is enhanced by its picturesque setting, surrounded by snow-capped mountains that retain their snowy allure well into the warmer months. This scenic backdrop, coupled with the lake’s refreshing waters, makes Fellaw Lake particularly popular during the spring and summer months. Visitors are drawn to its serene environment, which offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Access to Fellaw Lake has historically been challenging due to the presence of unexploded ordnance from the Ba’ath regime era and poor road conditions. However, recent government efforts have addressed these obstacles, significantly improving accessibility and ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for visitors.

One of Fellaw Lake’s most intriguing features is its unusual water flow. The lake’s water both emerges from and re-enters the lake in a mysterious manner, which has led to its local nickname, “Fellaw,” meaning “tricky.” This distinctive characteristic adds to the lake’s allure and fascination.

In recognition of its significance, the Kurdistan Regional Government has highlighted Fellaw Lake by granting it EU endorsement and presenting a handmade carpet inspired by the lake to a senior U.S. military official in Iraq. The government is committed to further developing the area, with ongoing improvements to infrastructure and efforts to attract investment. The Erbil Governorate and Choman Tourism Directorate are actively involved in planning these enhancements to boost the lake’s tourism potential.

Fellaw Lake continues to be one of Kurdistan’s most beautiful natural attractions, drawing countless visitors each year who come to experience its serene beauty and tranquil atmosphere.
