The Hawshar dog, renowned as one of Kurdistan’s strongest and most pure-bred canines, has deep roots in the “Pshdar” region of northeastern Sulaymaniyah. Known interchangeably as the Pshdar or Hawshar dog, this powerful breed is celebrated for its imposing stature and fierce temperament.
Primarily bred for shepherding, the Hawshar is skilled at confronting wolves, making it a valuable companion for herders. Although now found across Kurdish cities, Pshdar remains its true homeland, where the rarest and most distinguished varieties are still exclusively located.
Puppies of the Hawshar breed range in price from $200 to $2,000, depending on their lineage and variety. Buyers from Iran, Turkey, Russia, Lebanon, and Armenia have sought out this unique breed, investing significantly to bring these dogs to their own countries.
The most esteemed type of Hawshar is known as the “Saga Baran” or “Ram Dog.” A pure Kurdish breed, the Hawshar dog has been part of the region’s heritage since ancient times, embodying strength and loyalty for generations.
