Kurdistan Region joins International Minifootball Federation

Kurdistan Region’s national minifootball team can now compete internationally under
its own flag by joining the International Minifootball Federation (IMF)

The announcement was made by the General Directorate of Sports in the Kurdistan Region, confirming that Kurdistan has been formally admitted as a member of the global governing body for minifootball. The decision grants the Kurdistan national team eligibility to participate in official world and continental competitions, competing alongside national teams from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.
Officials described the development as a significant achievement for the Region’s expanding role in international sports and diplomacy.
Kurdistan’s admission follows its successful hosting of the Women’s Minifootball World Cup in Erbil in September last year. The tournament, organized under the supervision of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, drew teams and delegations from multiple countries and was widely praised for its organization and security.
The final, held on September 22 in Erbil, concluded with Egypt defeating Brazil in a penalty shootout to claim the championship title. The event received broad regional and international attention, reinforcing the Kurdistan Region’s reputation as a capable and stable host for major sporting competitions.
During the opening ceremony, IMF President Mohammed Al-Dosari stated that Erbil was selected to host the tournament because of the Region’s stability and strong logistical preparations. He commended local authorities for their professionalism and hospitality throughout the event.
Over recent years, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has invested in sports infrastructure, stadium development, and international partnerships as part of a wider strategy to promote youth engagement, economic activity, and global visibility. Membership in the IMF is seen as a continuation of these efforts, positioning the Region as an emerging hub for regional and international sporting events.
Minifootball, which is commonly known as six-a-side football, has experienced rapid growth worldwide, with structured competitions governed by the IMF. With formal membership now secured, Kurdistan’s teams will compete under recognized international regulations and rankings.
News of the membership has been welcomed enthusiastically by fans across the Region.
“This is more than just sports. It is about recognition and pride,” said Dilan Ahmed, a football supporter in Erbil. “Seeing our team compete internationally under the Kurdistan flag makes us feel represented.”
Another fan, Shivan Karim, described the development as “a historic moment for young athletes,” adding, “It gives hope to the next generation that they can represent Kurdistan on the world stage.”
Observers say Kurdistan’s accession to the IMF represents both a sporting milestone and a symbolic advancement in its international engagement. By expanding participation in global federations and hosting high-profile tournaments, the Region continues to strengthen its presence in international arenas through peaceful and constructive channels.
As preparations begin for upcoming competitions, officials expressed confidence that Kurdistan’s national minifootball team will not only compete, but also contribute to the continued growth and visibility of the sport worldwide.
