Leaders and decision-makers converge to explore diplomatic solutions amid rising regional instability
The fifth round of the Middle East Peace and Security Conference for the Eastern Mediterranean (MEPS24) opened in Duhok, at a time when tensions and conflicts in the region are at a critical point. The event, held at the American University in Kurdistan, attracted more than 120 participants, including leaders, decision-makers, and experts from 40 countries, who gathered to discuss pressing security challenges and explore ways to ease tensions.
This year’s conference was particularly timely, as the region faces an escalating conflict between Israel and Gaza, military actions in Lebanon, and rising hostilities between Iran and Israel. Recent missile exchanges between Iran and Israel have sparked concerns about the potential for further destabilization. Additionally, fears about the situation in Iraq, which could be drawn into the broader regional conflict, are growing.
The conference provided an important platform for dialogue, focusing on key issues such as reducing tensions, establishing diplomatic channels, and seeking solutions for the region’s ongoing crises. Participants also discussed the role of regional actors in Eastern Mediterranean affairs and the creation of frameworks for cooperation among conflicting parties.
Duhok was chosen as the venue for this year’s conference due to its reputation for stability, which reflects the Kurdistan Region’s role as a significant and secure player in regional politics. The city’s peaceful environment offered an ideal setting for constructive discussions, highlighting the importance of diplomatic initiatives to prevent further escalation.
In his keynote address, President Masoud Barzani of the Kurdistan Region emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and peace. “The presence of so many distinguished guests at this forum demonstrates the progress of the Kurdistan Region and the growing significance of the American University of Duhok,” he said. Barzani noted that the region’s future lies in peace, mutual understanding, and respect, stating, “Conflict brings no resolution. Only peace can resolve our challenges.”
Reflecting on recent political developments, Barzani praised the Kurdistan Region’s political maturity, particularly following last month’s historic elections. He expressed gratitude to the people of Kurdistan for demonstrating responsibility and commitment to democratic values, despite skepticism about the election’s feasibility.
The President also shared his concern over the dire situation in Lebanon and Gaza, calling the images from the ongoing conflicts “heartbreaking” and expressing hope for a swift resolution. He underscored that Iraq must avoid becoming entangled in the war, emphasizing the need for the country to remain separate from the broader regional conflicts.
Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu delivered a passionate address at the conference, urging regional cooperation and global accountability in addressing the entrenched conflicts in the Middle East. His speech focused on the necessity of building a sustainable peace framework that includes all parties involved.
Notable figures at the conference included the President of Iraq, the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, National Security Advisor Khamis Khenghar, and British Ambassador to Iraq, Haider al-Abadi. They joined the discussions and provided valuable insights into the current regional challenges.
The MEPS24 conference highlighted the urgency of diplomatic efforts to manage the rising tensions in the region. With the increasing threat of military escalation, the need for dialogue and cooperation among regional players is more critical than ever. As the conference concluded, it was clear that the path to peace requires sustained efforts to promote mutual understanding and resolve conflicts through diplomatic means.
