One nation, one path

The speeches of historical leaders, especially those who have been central to the liberation and development of their nations, deserve deep contemplation and analysis. These leaders not only reflect on the past but also shape the future. President Masoud Barzani is such a leader, a symbol of the Kurdish people whose influence extends far beyond the borders of Kurdistan. His speeches are more than just political statements; they carry the weight of a nation’s hopes, struggles, and aspirations.

President Barzani has long been at the helm of the Kurdish liberation movement, making crucial decisions and laying the groundwork for strategic projects that have shaped the region’s destiny. His leadership has been marked by a deep understanding of both the challenges of the past and the opportunities of the future. His vision is not limited to one part of Kurdistan, but embraces the concerns of Kurds wherever they may be in the world.

In his recent address, President Barzani emphasized the need for unity and cohesion within the Kurdistan Region, stating, “One Parliament, One Peshmerga Force, One Government.” This repeated call for unity is not just a slogan, but a reflection of his determination to safeguard the region’s political stability and protect its future. It highlights the President’s awareness of the risks facing the Kurdish people and his resolve to address them head-on.

President Barzani has always been a staunch advocate for progress, recognizing the need to overcome the obstacles that hinder the region’s political, economic, educational, and cultural development. He is fully aware of the current state of affairs in Kurdistan, acknowledging the level of progress made so far, while also emphasizing that there is much more to be done. His vision includes further projects that aim to propel the region toward greater stability and prosperity.

Central to this vision is the concept of a unified Peshmerga force, which serves as a symbol of Kurdish strength and courage. The absence of such unity would not only undermine the region’s security but could also lead to the fragmentation of the Peshmerga, a force that has long stood as a pillar of protection for the Kurdish people. Similarly, the ongoing efforts by some political parties to create multiple administrations or undermine the authority of the regional parliament poses a significant threat to Kurdistan’s political coherence.

As the Kurdistan Region faces these challenges, it is crucial that international actors—governments, embassies, and consulates in Iraq and beyond—support President Barzani’s vision. The stability of the Kurdistan Region depends on the realization of these key principles: a unified Peshmerga, a single governing body, and a parliament that serves the interests of all Kurds.

In a time of political turbulence and potential external threats, President Barzani’s call for unity and determination remains a beacon of hope for a secure and prosperous future for the Kurdish people. The path forward is clear—only through unity can Kurdistan truly thrive.
