Şehrîbana Kurdî and her iconic anthem

In the vibrant tapestry of Kurdish music, few voices resonate as powerfully as that of Şehrîbana Kurdî. Born in 1973 to a Kurdish family in Izmir, Turkey, her musical journey began at an early age. At just 13, she showcased her talent by winning first place in an annual music competition for students in Izmir, captivating the audience with her heartfelt rendition of the Turkish song “Ben Dogarken Aglamişim” (When I Was Born, I Cried).

Şehrîbana’s professional career took off in 1991 when she released her debut cassette, “Ez Keçim Keça Kurdanim” (I Am a Girl, A Kurdish Girl), a title that would soon become synonymous with her identity and artistry. This poignant anthem not only celebrates her Kurdish heritage but also reflects the struggles and triumphs of Kurdish women.

Over the years, Şehrîbana has released a series of impactful albums, including “Sor Gula Min” (1992), “Yek, Du, Sê” (1993), and “Evîna Stranan” (2005). Each record showcases her exquisite voice and her ability to weave together themes of love and patriotism, resonating deeply within the Kurdish community.

After spending many years in Turkey, Şehrîbana now calls Germany home, where her straightforward dialect continues to connect with audiences far and wide. As the eldest child in her family, she carries the legacy of her roots; her father was a government employee, and her mother, hailing from Diyarbakir, belongs to the prominent Omeri tribe.

With her poignant voice and unyielding spirit, Şehrîbana Kurdî remains a beloved figure in Kurdish music. She actively participates in concerts and musical events, inspiring new generations to embrace their heritage and celebrate their identity. Her contributions to music are not just artistic; they are a powerful reminder of the enduring strength and resilience of the Kurdish people.
