12th Duhok international Film Festival concludes successfully

The 12th edition of the Duhok International Film Festival concluded successfully, showcasing a diverse selection of films and celebrating global cinema, with Spain honored as this year’s guest nation.
Over five days, the festival screened a total of 110 films from 37 countries, including 65 international films and 45 Kurdish productions. The festival opened with a red-carpet ceremony attended by jury members, directors, actors, and prominent figures from the film industry. The first screening featured the Kurdish film My Uncle Jens, directed by Burwa Wahhabpour, a filmmaker from Eastern Kurdistan now based in Norway. The film tells the story of a young Kurdish man returning from Europe to reconnect with his mother in Kurdistan.
A total of 26 films competed for awards at this year’s festival, reflecting a growing interest in cinematic arts both locally and internationally.
Hassan Arif, spokesperson for the Duhok International Film Festival, praised the quality of the submissions, noting that audiences were pleased with the films showcased. He expressed hopes for the coming years, emphasizing the importance of producing more local films in Duhok to strengthen Kurdish cinema. “We want our directors to create films, participate in the festival, and compete for awards,” he said.
The festival continues to serve as a platform for cultural exchange, creative expression, and the promotion of Kurdish cinema alongside global film productions.
