Strengthening the Kurdish voice in Baghdad

By | Dr. Nazaket Hussen

The upcoming Iraqi Council of Representatives election stands as one of the most pivotal political events shaping the future of Iraq—and, importantly, the Kurdistan Region. Beyond conferring legal legitimacy on the country’s political process, this election presents a crucial opportunity for Kurdish representatives to solidify their position in Baghdad. Active and united Kurdish participation is essential to safeguard constitutional rights and ensure the Kurdish voice resonates clearly at the national level.
Legal legitimacy is the cornerstone of any modern democracy. When citizens cast their votes and elect their representatives, they grant trust and authority to the government. This, in turn, ensures that governance reflects public will and that decision-makers remain accountable to the people. In a nation as diverse as Iraq, composed of multiple ethnic and religious groups, free and fair elections are vital to preserving balance and true representation.
For the Kurdish people, a strong and cohesive presence in the Council of Representatives carries strategic importance. Baghdad remains the arena where decisive political and economic policies are shaped—policies that directly affect the Kurdistan Region. A unified Kurdish bloc can effectively defend regional interests, uphold constitutional guarantees, and secure an equitable share of the national budget and resources. Moreover, it can contribute meaningfully to resolving long-standing disputes, such as those concerning oil and gas laws and the administration of contested territories.
To maximize the benefits of participation, several key steps must be emphasized. First, broad civic engagement is necessary—citizens must be encouraged to exercise their right to vote. Second, Kurdish representatives should present a united front in Baghdad, speaking with one voice to advocate for their people’s rights. Third, the electoral process itself must be transparent and fair, fostering trust and reinforcing the legitimacy of democratic institutions.
Achieving these goals requires close coordination among Kurdish political leaders and parties to develop a coherent, forward-looking strategy. At the same time, voters in the Kurdistan Region must recognize the power of their participation in shaping the future. Their choices determine who will effectively represent Kurdish aspirations and defend national rights in Iraq’s complex political landscape.
The election of the sixth term of the Iraqi Council of Representatives carries far-reaching implications. With unity, vision, and active engagement, Kurdish representatives can play a decisive role in protecting the constitutional and political rights of their people—ensuring that the Kurdish voice in Baghdad remains strong, influential, and enduring.
