Protecting the Kurds for lasting peace

By | Dr. Nazaket Hussen

In recent years, political developments in the Middle East have unfolded at such speed that analyzing their causes and consequences has become increasingly difficult. Events in Rojava, alongside shifts in global politics, have once again demonstrated a central truth: survival in this region depends on strategic vision and timely action.
For the Kurds, this moment is particularly critical. Reports and discussions surrounding initiatives to “protect the Kurds” highlight a historic opportunity. A structured and internationally supported protection framework could safeguard Kurdish communities, strengthen their political standing, and reinforce their right to dignity and self-determination.
The key question, however, is how the Kurdistan Region will position itself within this evolving landscape. Threats facing the Region continue to grow, while nearly every major regional conflict disproportionately affects Kurdish populations. Time and again, Kurds have found themselves victims of broader geopolitical tensions.
At the same time, the Kurdistan Region possesses significant strategic advantages. Its energy resources alone place it in an important position within the emerging global political and economic order. Southern Kurdistan remains the only stable and self-governing Kurdish entity, serving as a refuge for displaced communities and a platform for dialogue and conflict resolution. Its leadership — particularly President Masoud Barzani — has consistently supported peace initiatives and worked to prevent wider regional escalation.
For lasting peace in the Middle East, the protection and stabilization of Kurdish regions must be viewed not as a local issue, but as a strategic necessity. Over the past 30 years, despite political and economic crises, the Kurdistan Region has demonstrated its capacity to promote stability, coexistence, and humanitarian assistance.
The United States and other influential international actors should therefore support initiatives that enhance Kurdish security and institutional strength. A secure and empowered Kurdish presence contributes not only to Kurdish interests, but to broader regional balance and long-term peace.
