Psychological drama by director Akar Karim receives Special Jury Award at U.S. festival, highlighting rising Kurdish independent cinema..
The short film Mirror of the Mind, directed by Akar Karim, has won the Special Jury Award at the Former Warriors Media Festival in the United States, earning recognition as a standout independent production on the international stage.
The director described the film as an artistic success that has been submitted to multiple local and international festivals. He expressed pride in the achievement and extended congratulations to the cast and crew, expressing hope for further awards in upcoming competitions.
Karim explained that the film carries a deep psychological theme, focusing on the internal struggles of the human mind. The story explores conflict between memory, fear, despair, and life pressures, portraying how personal experiences are continuously reflected in one’s thoughts and emotions—much like a mirror of the mind.
He added that the central character lives under heavy emotional and social pressure, appearing calm outwardly while enduring intense inner psychological conflict. The narrative follows this tension as memories and daily struggles gradually shape the character’s reality.
The director also highlighted the importance of the Former Warriors Media Festival as an international platform supporting independent cinema. He said the selection of Mirror of the Mind among global entries reflects the growing quality of Kurdish filmmaking among young creators.
The film was produced with the collaboration of several students and university graduates, with Kamal Ali playing the lead role.
