Nechirvan Barzani praises Peshmerga sacrifices in fight against ISIS and urges renewed political will to complete force integration
The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, has reiterated the importance of completing the unification process of the Peshmerga forces, emphasizing that sustained political commitment is essential to transform them into a single national military institution.
His remarks were delivered during the 30th graduation ceremony of an officer training course held at Military College 2 in Zakho, attended by senior officials and military representatives.
In his speech, President Barzani highlighted the historic role of the Peshmerga in defending Kurdistan and their decisive contribution in the fight against ISIS. He stated that the forces, under the leadership of President Masoud Barzani, made significant sacrifices that prevented the advance of terrorist groups and protected the region’s territorial integrity.
He said the legacy of the Peshmerga is defined by “heroism and sacrifice,” underscoring their role in safeguarding the people of Kurdistan during critical phases of conflict.
At the same time, the President acknowledged ongoing challenges in advancing the unification process, noting that progress has not met public expectations. He stressed that the people of Kurdistan have long awaited a unified force that operates independently of political divisions.
Barzani called for stronger political will to ensure that the Peshmerga evolve into a cohesive national institution, separate from partisan influence, and capable of serving all citizens equally.
He also expressed gratitude to the international coalition forces, particularly the United States, for their continued support during the war against ISIS and for their assistance in reform efforts within the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.
In addition, he urged the Federal Government of Iraq to fully meet its financial and logistical obligations toward the Peshmerga, describing them as an integral component of Iraq’s broader defense system.
Addressing newly graduated officers, President Barzani encouraged them to uphold discipline, justice, and national responsibility, stating that they should serve as role models within the ranks of the Peshmerga and remain committed to protecting all citizens without discrimination.
