One of the main factors of progress and survival of any nation depends on the extent to which it is aware of modern technological changes and use them to serve the country. Given this sense of responsibility, the opening of the College of Artificial Intelligence at Salahaddin University-Erbil is an innovative vision of the Kurdistan Regional Government in an era of rapid digital change. The importance of this step is part of the Kurdistan Region’s strategy to support higher education and keep pace with modern technological advances, as the government issued a ministerial decree in September 2025 to establish a new college called “College of Computer and Information Sciences” includes the departments: Information Technology, Computer Science, and the Artificial Intelligence. The aim of the college is to provide students with the necessary skills in the fields of artificial intelligence and its various applications, and open up a wide range of job market prospects for students to move towards increased reliance on smart technologies.
In today’s world, digital transformation has become an inevitable necessity in most government sectors, and in light of these rapid changes, artificial intelligence is seen as an important driver for development in areas such as computer vision, machine learning, big data analysis, and intelligent automation. In view of this responsibility, the Kurdistan Regional Government considers it its duty to pay more attention to building a strong educational foundation, to meet the current challenges, by establishing such a college, opens the door to attract students and train them on the latest technological equipment Digital and improve the quality of life of the citizens of the region.
This qualitative initiative, an educational step expresses the region’s philosophy in investing in the realm of science and innovation, and presents itself as a key pillar for sustainable and inclusive development. Although not limited to providing education, it will also be a very effective incentive for scientific research in collaboration with academic and industrial institutions to develop effective practical projects that can serve the Kurdistan Region and contribute to technological self-sufficiency. At the same time, the educational system of this college provides a unique opportunity for students to become familiar with advanced fields of this specialty, such as robotics, drones, digital health, and biological information, etc.
Totally, under the shadow of the information revolution and digital changes that the world is going through, the establishment of the College of Artificial Intelligence at Salahaddin University is a step for the Kurdistan Region in both education and innovation Strategically, it plays a significant role in strengthening the region’s position at the regional and global levels, and recognizing it as a modern scientific and technical center, which can support economic and social development and prepare society for a bright scientific future.
