Artist Hama Hashim showcases “Memories of Stone” in Erbil

Erbil – Kurdish sculptor Hama Hashim has unveiled his latest exhibition, Memories of Stone, at the Media Gallery in Erbil under the supervision of the General Directorate of Culture and Arts and the Directorate of Sculpture Arts.
Renowned as one of the most prolific figures in Kurdish sculpture, Hashim continues to push artistic boundaries through his abstract expressionist style. Reflecting on his creative journey, he explained that while his earlier works were rooted in academic themes, his recent focus embraces modern and contemporary art forms such as relief sculpture and land art.
Hashim highlighted the distinction between modern and contemporary art, noting that “modern art developed from the Renaissance through movements like Impressionism to Postmodernism, while contemporary art represents the creative spirit of today.” He added that art, above all, should evoke emotion and engage deeply with viewers, serving as a free and expressive form of communication.
Born in 1973 in Koya, Hashim graduated from the Fine Arts Institute of Erbil. Over his career, he has held 15 solo exhibitions, published five books on art, and participated in around 100 group exhibitions across Kurdistan and internationally — including in Germany, France, Poland, India, Britain, and the United States. He currently teaches at the Fine Arts Institute of Erbil and is preparing three additional books for publication.
