The Ninth Balakayati Cultural Festival was held on May 1 in the Koran tomb area of the Galala district in Choman, bringing together community members to celebrate the rich traditions of the Balakayati region.
The annual event featured participants dressed in traditional Kurdish attire, with women displaying handcrafted items and men engaging in cultural demonstrations that reflected the daily life and resilience of Kurdish villagers.
The festival focused on showcasing the heritage and identity of the Kurdish people, especially the customs and labor of those living in the mountainous Balakayati area. Many young men and women proudly wore traditional clothing, aiming to highlight what they described as the “authenticity and folklore” of their culture.
Attendees also emphasized the importance of preserving Kurdish dress, encouraging its use beyond festivals and formal occasions. “These garments are a living part of our culture and identity,” one participant said.
The Balakayati Cultural Festival continues to be a powerful expression of community pride and cultural preservation in the Kurdistan Region.
