A fresh wave of snowfall has covered the Balakayati region, cloaking its mountain peaks in white and drawing the interest of tourists. Despite the ongoing effects of climate change, including dust storms and reduced rainfall, the area has received a significant amount of snow that is expected to remain through August.
The snowfall has transformed the peaks of the Halgurd mountain range, Chikhi Dare, Mamuro, Qarad, and Bardebuki mountains into a winter-like scene, even as spring progresses. This rare weather phenomenon highlights the unpredictable effects of global climate change, which has brought lingering cold and snow well into the season.
The lasting snow not only enhances the natural beauty of Balakayati but also boosts its appeal as a destination for both Iraqi and international tourists, especially during the summer months when cooler highland climates are most sought after.
