Beekeeping in Kurdistan: Preserving heritage and growing exports

Beekeeping has been a treasured profession in Kurdistan since ancient times. Thanks to its favorable climate and mountainous terrain, Kurdistan’s honey has long been celebrated as some of the finest in the region. For generations, many villagers have tended to bees, producing honey that carries the rich heritage of their land.
Today, beekeeping in Kurdistan is more organized than ever. Local associations represent beekeepers, voicing their concerns and needs to the government and relevant authorities. Recognizing the value of honey production within agricultural development, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has given the sector significant attention and support.
A recent milestone is the export of Kurdistan’s honey to international markets. In past years, honey production suffered due to conflicts along border areas involving PKK militants and Turkey, which forced many farmers to abandon their villages. However, as reconstruction efforts progress and families return to their homes, experts anticipate a boost in honey production. The KRG is actively working to support beekeepers further and expand foreign markets for their products.
The agricultural sector’s growth and the marketing of local goods abroad are key priorities for the KRG’s ninth cabinet. These efforts aim to diversify Kurdistan’s economy, reducing reliance on oil, and positioning the region as a vital contributor to the food basket both domestically and internationally.
Honey stands out as a prime example of this success. Its growing presence in foreign markets encourages beekeepers to invest more in their craft and explore new opportunities. The Regional Government plans to increase honey exports and has made marketing a priority, hosting annual festivals across Kurdistan to showcase local honey products and connect producers with buyers.
With deep roots in tradition and a bright future in global markets, Kurdistan’s honey symbolizes both heritage and progress for the region.
