Erbil is once again the stage for a unique football championship, as the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Foreign Relations organizes its annual tournament for consulates and diplomatic missions. The event, now in its second consecutive year, features daily matches between teams representing various countries, highlighting the region’s commitment to peace and coexistence.
Tournament spokesperson Abdul Khaliq Mohammed announced that the competition, which commenced recently, will continue until June 4. A total of 14 consulate teams, along with representatives from UN agencies and the Ministry of Foreign Relations, are participating in this year’s championship.
In a novel approach to sportsmanship and environmental awareness, players receiving red or yellow cards are required to plant a tree as a penalty. This initiative underscores the tournament’s emphasis on positive values and community engagement.
The opening match saw the Italian Consulate team secure a 2-0 victory over the Japanese Consulate team, setting an enthusiastic tone for the tournament.
The championship not only fosters friendly competition among diplomatic missions but also serves as a platform to strengthen international relations and showcase the Kurdistan Region’s hospitality and commitment to cultural exchange.
