Modern dual carriageways, tunnels, and bridges to ease traffic and improve safety
After three months of intensive engineering work, the strategic Erbil–Gomespan–Koya–Hanara road project has been completed, with paving now finished and the road set to open soon. The project transforms a formerly congested area into modern dual carriageways, featuring overpasses, tunnels, bridges, and a comprehensive drainage system built to international standards.
Previously, the Gomespan Pass was a traffic bottleneck connecting Koya, Erbil, Shaqlawa, and Gomespan. The new infrastructure, which includes four bridges, one underpass, 40 box culverts, safety barriers, and proper signage, ensures safer and smoother travel while enhancing the region’s aesthetics.
The project was carried out entirely by local companies and workforce—2,000 personnel and 600 machines—and is considered a key strategic achievement for Erbil Governorate. Once the Erbil–Smaqulli dual carriageway is finished, the route will span 38 kilometers, further improving regional connectivity.
Part of a broader four-year infrastructure campaign led by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, this project marks a significant step in modernizing Kurdistan’s roads, reducing accidents, and facilitating travel for citizens and tourists alike.
