Erbil launches Middle East’s largest smartphone factory

The Kurdistan Region’s Board of Investment announced on Friday that “the largest” Infinix Mobile manufacturing company in the Middle East has begun production in Erbil.

“The largest smartphone manufacturing facility in the Middle East has started production in Erbil,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Board of Investment on Friday.

Production will primarily be handled by local workers, with assistance from Chinese experts.

“The factory, the first of its kind to manufacture smartphones in the Middle East, will produce 30,000 cellphones each month with the support of Chinese technological experts,” the statement added.

The factory has also created numerous jobs.

“Domestic workers make up ninety-seven percent of the workforce, including a significant number of Yazidi survivors,” the Board of Investment stated.

Transsion Holdings, a Hong Kong-based smartphone manufacturer, founded Infinix Mobile in 2013.

Infinix smartphones, which run on the Android operating system, are manufactured in France, India, Brazil, Korea, China, and Pakistan, and are sold in Asia and over 30 countries in the Middle East and Africa.
