Fair elections are essential for Kurdistan’s stability

By | Dr. Nazaket Hussen

The people of Kurdistan desire a clean and honest election. Elections are a democratic process involving public participation; therefore, the clearer the results, the more they will be accepted, and the more patient and balanced the response will be.

The Kurdistan Region is currently preparing for parliamentary elections. However, there is considerable confusion among political parties and the public regarding the fairness and transparency of the process.

It is crucial for international observers and consuls to recognize the importance of maintaining peace and stability in this region, to accept the consequences of their involvement, and to support the formation of a government that can effectively address challenges, including terrorism. Advocating for a transparent and fair electoral process is vital, especially given the current crises and turmoil in the Middle East.

A safe and strong region at local, regional, and international levels will help alleviate tensions and promote stability. Furthermore, the Kurdish leadership—particularly President Barzani, along with the two regional presidents and the prime minister—has played a significant role in fostering an environment conducive to negotiations and bringing conflicting parties closer together.

Additionally, the Kurdistan Region has established numerous understandings and agreements with neighboring countries and the Gulf, contributing agricultural products that serve as a food source for some nations due to its fertile environment. The presence of a courageous force like the Peshmerga, which stands against terrorism and the lingering threat of ISIS, is a crucial asset that must be protected through cooperation with powerful international stakeholders engaged in Middle Eastern affairs.

Moreover, the region serves as an energy source capable of meeting future energy demands and addressing energy shortages, complemented by its high-level diplomatic capabilities. All these factors and many others contribute to making it possible for the international community to support a successful, clean, and transparent election. In the near future, the region is poised to establish a new parliament and government.
