Preparations are now underway for Akre figs to be exported to other cities in Iraq
The delicious figs of Akre have reached maturity. The city alone has 250,000 fig trees, which have brought prosperity to the city due to strong market demand. A portion of the harvest is now being prepared for export to other cities in Iraq.
Since the beginning of this month, Akre figs have ripened, and several tons are sent daily to the markets of Akre and Duhok. Last year, total fig production exceeded eight thousand tons. However, this year’s daily output is not yet known. While most of Akre’s figs go to the Duhok market, they are now also reaching Erbil, with plans to expand to other Iraqi cities.
The climate, soil quality, and water availability in the region contribute to the high quality of Akre’s figs. In addition to their richness, they offer a unique taste and flavor compared to figs from other regions. Several varieties grow here, including yellow, green, and black types—some of which are especially suited for drying.
One variety in the area lasts until the autumn season and can withstand cold weather. The 250,000 fig trees are owned by growers in Akre. The town of Akre, along with Dinarta, Bjil, and several surrounding villages, is well known for its figs.
Figs, beyond their delicious taste, are often called a miraculous fruit due to their nutritional value and medicinal properties.
