Jalal Said A Voice That Echoes Through Time

Erbil, Kurdistan – Jalal Said, a celebrated Kurdish artist known for his deep connection to folk music, was born in 1953 in the city of Mahabad, Eastern Kurdistan. His journey in the world of music began at an early age, and his voice would go on to leave a lasting impact on Kurdish art and culture.

In 1958, Said’s family relocated to Erbil, where he pursued his primary education. It was in this city that his passion for singing took root, leading him to record his first song, Beautiful Black Eyes, in 1970. This marked the beginning of a prolific musical career that would span decades.

Said collaborated with the Erbil Art Group and the Folk Art Group, recording dozens of songs and captivating audiences with his emotional performances. He was a fixture at hundreds of artistic events and concerts, where his soulful voice, often accompanied by folk tableaux, enriched the cultural experience.

Throughout his career, Said recorded hundreds of songs, breathing new life into traditional Kurdish music. His dedication to preserving and modernizing folk art cemented his legacy as a pioneer in the Kurdish music scene. His authentic and melodious voice garnered a devoted following, and his songs continue to be cherished by many.

His legacy lives on through his son, Shamal, who is also a singer. Following in his father’s footsteps, Shamal has inherited not only Jalal Said’s passion for music but also his distinctive voice. So striking is the similarity between them that many listeners find it difficult to distinguish between father and son.

Jalal Said passed away in 2013 and was laid to rest in Erbil. Though he is gone, his music remains, a testament to his enduring influence on Kurdish art and culture.
