Korek mountain: Kurdistan’s premier winter getaway

Korek Mountain has long held a place in history, but today it stands out as one of the Kurdistan Region’s most popular winter tourist destinations. Thanks to initiatives by the Kurdistan Regional Government, the mountain has attracted increasing numbers of visitors seeking scenic landscapes and winter recreation.
This year, heavy snowfall across the region drew both locals and tourists to Korek Mountain for skiing, sightseeing, and leisure. The mountain offers 132 tourist houses and hotels with 94 rooms, yet high demand often leaves accommodations fully booked. On weekends, over 4,000 visitors are reported to enjoy the area.
Located 90 kilometres from Erbil, near Gali Ali Beg resort in Rawanduz district, Korek Mountain rises over 2,000 metres as part of the Zagros range and sits just 53 kilometres from the Iranian border. Its elevated terrain and scenic vistas make it a popular winter retreat for tourists from Iraq and abroad.
The mountain’s weather is cold and unpredictable, with snowy winters and mild, cool summers. Temperatures range from 2°C to 33°C, with the lowest recorded at -14°C. Annual rainfall varies from 20 to 75 millimetres, and heavy snowfall each year ensures Korek Mountain remains a top winter destination for visitors.
