KRG launches solar system project to boost clean energy

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has officially launched the “Solar System” project to encourage citizens and businesses to produce clean energy through solar power. The initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Electricity, has established Renewable Energy Departments within city electricity distribution directorates.
Under the new system, citizens can generate solar energy for their own consumption and return any surplus production to the national electricity grid.
The project works by capturing solar energy and converting it from DC to AC electricity via inverters. The electricity produced is sufficient to meet daily needs as long as sunlight is available, with excess energy automatically transferred back into the national grid.
With abundant sunshine across all seasons, the Kurdistan Region has favorable conditions for solar energy generation. Recognizing this, the Ministry of Electricity has formed a dedicated Solar System Committee to facilitate the project.
Through the program, households, businesses, and merchants can install solar panels, generate their own electricity, and use smart meters to sell surplus energy back to the government. At night, if additional power is needed, consumers can draw from the national grid either at no cost or for a minimal fee. This “on-grid” system is especially effective as Kurdistan’s electricity supply has become more reliable through recent infrastructure improvements.
Officials highlight both the environmental and economic benefits of the project. Unlike traditional energy sources, solar power does not release harmful gases, reducing air pollution. Economically, solar users will save on electricity bills in the long run, with some even profiting by selling their surplus production.
For the government, the project also reduces the strain on national power stations and transmission lines, helping secure a continuous and stable electricity supply.
The “Solar System” project, described as one of the government’s most promising renewable energy initiatives, is expected to bring lasting benefits to both citizens and businesses by providing clean, reliable, and cost-effective electricity.
