Prime Minister Masrour Barzani spearheads the final stage of Peshmerga unification, urging rapid integration of Units 70 and 80.
The Ministry of Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Regional Government announced that it is approaching the final stages of reforming Units 70 and 80 and establishing a unified military accounting unit.
Recently, representatives of the Coalition discussed the final steps of the reform process of Units 70 and 80, the implementation points, challenges of the process, and the coordination of accounting procedures. The Coalition expressed satisfaction with the progress of reforms in the Ministry of Peshmerga, describing the steps as positive.
Importantly, the Ministry of Peshmerga has decided to implement one of the key points of the reform process by creating and completing a unified military accounting unit for all Kurdistan Peshmerga forces under the Ministry’s umbrella. With this decision, the process has reached the final phase of reform.
According to the information, Units 70 and 80 will be dissolved but will complete the process of restructuring and developing the capacities of Sectors 1 and 2 in their areas. The Ministry is also providing the necessary logistics and accelerating the steps of establishment, reorganization, and unification of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces. According to the Coalition’s statement, this step represents an important and historic phase toward forming a unified national Kurdistan force.
Osman Mohammed, the Director General of Media and Awareness at the Ministry of Peshmerga, said to The Kurdish Globe: “The KRG PM Masrour Barzani emphasized the need for the rapid integration of Units 70 and 80 under the Ministry of Peshmerga. Currently, there are three separate bank accounts under the name of the Peshmerga forces. The Ministry of Peshmerga is preparing to establish the 1st and 2nd Commands directly affiliated with the Ministry.”
The Ministry’s spokesperson pointed out that once Units 70 and 80 are dissolved, their duties and functions will change. Alongside the transition of their military system, both partisan commands will no longer exist and will be merged into the Ministry of Peshmerga. “We are also working on unifying the structure of the Peshmerga forces,” he added.
He continued: “There are three bank accounts under the name of the Peshmerga in the Ministry of Finance. It has been decided that these accounts will be merged into a single bank account under the Ministry of Peshmerga. Soon, the 1st and 2nd regional commands will be formed. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has urged that the integration of Units 70 and 80 under the Ministry of Peshmerga be accelerated. Therefore, the Ministry is making preparations for the reorganization of its structure.”
The Peshmerga Ministry official further stated that the Coalition partners acknowledge the Ministry’s reform steps toward unifying the Peshmerga forces under one command. “Due to regional changes and global needs, it is crucial to focus more on institutionalized and disciplined forces. Fortunately, political parties have realized that this is the best opportunity to cooperate with the government to unify the Peshmerga forces. We believe the time has come for full integration. The Peshmerga are currently receiving training and exercises from the Coalition,” he said.
