KRG plans major shift to electronic government services

Efforts to modernize government operations in the Kurdistan Region are accelerating, as authorities move away from traditional methods of processing citizens’ transactions. Specialized departments within the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have already begun implementing electronic systems, and some are now fully operational. Officials say the majority of government services will be digitized in the near future.
Mohammed Shukri, Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Investment Board, emphasized that investment in technology is a top priority for the region. “Investment in technology is one of the main goals of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Any foreign or domestic company wishing to utilize technology and invest in it will receive our full support,” Shukri said.
Shukri highlighted the importance of technology across various sectors. In agriculture, for example, new technologies are essential for optimizing the use of surplus products and improving efficiency in distribution. Similarly, in education, most schools in the region are now integrating technology, with programs designed to introduce students to digital tools from primary stages onward, preparing them for future opportunities.
The KRG has long been working toward establishing a fully electronic government, and officials confirm that most public services will soon be accessible online. Shukri also noted that international tech giants, including Google, have shown interest in establishing centers in the Kurdistan Region, reflecting growing confidence in the local tech sector.
Under directives from Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, any project implemented in the region must employ at least 75% local labor. Exceptions are made when foreign experts are required temporarily, until local professionals gain the necessary expertise.
Shukri added that several licenses have already been granted to local companies investing in digital banking, and the government continues to support private sector initiatives that leverage technology. “Any company in the Kurdistan Region that wishes to benefit from technology will receive our support,” he affirmed.
