Kurdish taekwondo athlete earns historic international rank

Hemin Mahdi, a talented Taekwondo athlete from Erbil, has made history by becoming the first Kurdistani and Iraqi to be promoted from Black Belt 6th Dan to Black Belt 7th Dan by the prestigious World Taekwondo Center KUKKIWON in South Korea. This achievement marks a major milestone for Taekwondo in Kurdistan and Iraq.
Currently in South Korea to receive the honor, Hemin expressed his pride and gratitude. “By the grace of Almighty God, I am the first person at the level of Iraq and Kurdistan to be promoted by the World Taekwondo Center KUKKIWON to Black Belt 7th Dan,” he said. “This is a great and historic achievement for Kurds, Kurdistan, and Iraq.”
In addition to the promotion, Hemin was presented with a special belt signed by the President of the World Taekwondo Center, Lee Dong Seop. This belt is reserved only for distinguished individuals, highlighting the significance of Hemin’s accomplishment.
Looking ahead, Hemin is committed to using his new rank to further develop Taekwondo in Kurdistan and Iraq. “With God’s support, I hope to live up to this rank and serve all Taekwondo practitioners in the region,” he said.
Hemin’s journey is a testament to his dedication and hard work, and his achievement brings pride to the sporting community across Kurdistan and Iraq.
