Kurdish women lead in university athletics

High demand for sports science programs drives female participation and Career opportunities

Kurdish women are increasingly excelling in athletics, both locally and internationally, with many achieving impressive levels of performance each year.
Sports science programs at universities and institutes in Kurdistan are experiencing high demand, particularly among female students. This trend is largely due to the abundant employment opportunities in the sports industry, especially outside of government sectors.
In Kurdistan, numerous universities and institutes offer specialized sports science programs, covering areas such as running, football, basketball, volleyball, and swimming. This growing interest has led to a significant rise in admissions in recent years.
“I’m drawn to the sports departments because, after graduation, I can find work in various sectors, especially in private gyms, which are in high demand,” said Narmin Ahmed, a student planning to enroll in a sports science program at a Kurdish university. She added, “Sports have become an integral part of our culture and daily life in Kurdistan.”
Karwan Gardi, a committee member of Erbil Sports Club, highlighted the increasing interest from women: “Sports have gained significant attention, especially among girls. Most sports-related departments now have female athletes who’ve completed their education. The growing importance of sports science is now a key topic in daily sports news.”
With the support of Kurdistan’s Ministry of Higher Education, many female students receive specialized training and have the opportunity to take courses abroad, where they continue to excel.
