Kurdistan: A hub of international diplomacy and peaceful coexistence

Erbil governor, Omed Khoshnaw: Erbil fosters a welcoming environment for consulates.

In Kurdistan, the presence of various foreign consulates is a visible testament to the region’s commitment to peace and coexistence. Omed Khoshnaw, the Governor of Erbil, emphasizes the unique environment that has been cultivated for diplomatic representatives in the city.

“When any foreign consul takes office in Kurdistan, we make it a point to give them a tour of Erbil’s bazaar and introduce them to Kurdish culture,” Khoshnaw explains. “They are often amazed by the level of coexistence and peace we enjoy here.”

Erbil’s streets, parks, and restaurants bustle with representatives from diverse nations and local communities, illustrating the harmony that defines the region. New consulate staff often begin their journey by enjoying tea at the famed Machko Chaikhana, followed by a visit to Qaysari Bazaar. Their social media accounts frequently reflect their positive experiences, highlighting the peaceful and harmonious nature of life in Kurdistan.

The growing number of national representations in Erbil is a direct result of the city’s recent developments and its reputation for inclusivity. Khoshnaw notes that the people of Kurdistan deeply believe in the importance of coexistence among different religions and ethnic groups, a sentiment that resonates with foreign diplomats.

“This environment encourages country representatives to motivate their citizens to visit Kurdistan and witness our unique coexistence and natural beauty firsthand,” he says, pointing out the significant impact this has on promoting Kurdistan’s image on the global stage.

Khoshnaw further elaborates, “During my participation in various international forums and conferences, what captures attention is the coexistence that exists in Kurdistan. A peaceful environment has been established for all consulates, with many diplomats visiting public spaces without bodyguards, reflecting the safety and tranquility of Erbil.”

He concludes by acknowledging that the peaceful coexistence in Erbil deserves recognition and appreciation from the international community. “Today, Erbil stands as a pivotal center for important decision-making in the region, thanks to the government’s commitment to advancing all sectors.”
