Kurdistan pushes wider turnout for federal vote

Kurdish leaders urge broad participation in Iraq’s 2025 elections to secure rights and influence policy.

The upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections are expected to draw greater attention as Iraqi political parties intensify competition for parliamentary seats. According to the 2005 Constitution, the Kurdistan Region and other components of Iraq form key parts of the Iraqi nation. Participation in the federal parliamentary elections provides an opportunity to influence national decision-making — including laws and policies that directly or indirectly affect all citizens.
Idris Ismail, a former Kurdistan MP, told The Kurdish Globe: “Many citizens of the Kurdistan Region are asking why they should vote in Iraq’s federal parliamentary elections on November 11, 2025, when Kurdistan already has its own parliament and government.
While this question may seem reasonable in principle, it carries deep political and strategic implications for Iraq’s future as a federal state and for the rights of the Kurdish people as an essential partner in this system, established after 2003. Without the participation of Kurdistan Region representatives, Kurds could lose their voice in critical national matters — such as the budget, security, foreign policy, and development projects — which all directly or indirectly affect the Region.”
He added that active Kurdish participation and unity among Kurdish representatives in Baghdad could help ensure the implementation of agreements between Erbil and Baghdad, reduce tensions, and resolve long-standing disputes such as Article 140, the Oil and Gas Law, and Kurdistan’s share of the federal budget.
Sagvan Sindi, a current Iraqi MP, also told The Kurdish Globe: “It’s essential for Kurds to participate widely in this election, because federal elections provide a mechanism to safeguard Kurdistan’s constitutional and legal rights. For example, Iraq’s federal budget — which determines Kurdistan’s share of financial resources — is passed by the Iraqi parliament. By participating, Kurds can ensure that capable representatives defend their constitutional entitlements, including fair revenue distribution from oil and gas.”
Analysts say Kurdish participation in federal elections demonstrates support for federalism as a constitutional principle and serves as a mechanism for balancing relations between Iraq’s regions.
This system grants each region, including Kurdistan, a degree of self-governance, while also allowing Kurdish representatives in the federal parliament to protect their rights and ensure constitutional guarantees are upheld.
Through federal participation, the Kurdish people reaffirm their readiness to cooperate with all Iraqi components to strengthen political stability and sustainable development.
Idris Ismail, political analyst, further emphasized that active Kurdish participation in Baghdad’s parliament could also drive reforms and policy changes affecting the Kurdistan Region — such as improving resource-sharing mechanisms and ensuring full implementation of constitutional clauses related to the Region.
He noted that the federal parliament is a legal instrument that can be used to advance such changes.
He concluded: “Ultimately, voting for Iraq’s federal parliament is not just an electoral act — it’s a strategic step that reflects the Kurdish people’s will to protect their rights within Iraq’s federal system and to advance Kurdistan’s interests in national decision-making, ensuring a stable Region and a democratic Iraq where all groups share in governance.”
