Narcissus: The cherished blossom of Kurdistan’s spring

Narcissus is one of Kurdistan’s most beloved spring flowers, prized for its aesthetic appeal and pleasant fragrance. Its blooming marks the arrival of spring, filling markets and even streets as vendors sell the flower due to high demand.
The flower grows to about 15 centimeters in height and adds charm to many areas of Kurdistan. Hundreds of dunams of land are dedicated to its cultivation, providing an important source of income for local farmers. Its cultural significance is also reflected in Kurdish names, as many women are named Nargiz, symbolizing beauty and purity.
Among its varieties, the Akre narcissus is the most distinctive and well-known. In Akre, the flower has become a symbol of the city’s beauty and heritage. Agricultural officials report that over 70 dunams of land have been planted with narcissus for this year’s Nowruz celebration.
Besides its beauty, narcissus is valued for its scientific benefits. The flower’s scent has calming and antidepressant effects, stimulates blood circulation, relieves migraines, benefits the skin, and may even help inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
Due to high demand, narcissus is increasingly exported outside Kurdistan. Prices for a bunch range from $1 to $3, and tourists often purchase it as a local souvenir. Many visitors from other cities and Arab tourists buy the flower to resell elsewhere.
Fazil Mustafa, Director of Agriculture in Akre, said that narcissus has become a major source of income for the local community. He noted that the Regional Government has supported the agricultural sector, helping farmers access strong markets and export opportunities.
Narcissus continues to be a symbol of spring in Kurdistan, blending natural beauty, cultural heritage, and economic value.
