PM Barzani announces Taq Taq as new district

Residents express satisfaction with the districtization of their subdistrict, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting the citizens.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani announced two significant developments for the people of the region during his speech at the opening ceremony of the new academic year 2024-2025 at Najiba Khani Jalizadeh School in Koya. “We will commence construction of the Erbil-Koya Road, which has long been a demand of the people of Koya and Erbil,” he stated.

Barzani also shared another piece of good news for the people of Koya, saying, “We have decided to district Taq Taq, one of the oldest subdistricts in Kurdistan. This decision will benefit the residents of the region and alleviate the administrative burden on Koya, ultimately serving all citizens, especially those in Koya and Taq Taq.”

On the same day, September 25, 2025, the Erbil Governorate announced on its official Facebook page that, “Following the recommendation and order of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, in order to better serve the citizens and enhance service projects across various borders, as well as to improve the administrative and operational capabilities of the residents in the districts, today, Wednesday, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, during the official announcement marking the start of the 2024-2025 academic year, has announced the districtization of Taq Taq in Erbil governorate.”

“This decision is now in effect, and the administrative and legal procedures will soon begin to finalize the necessary arrangements,” he added.

Erbil Provincial Council Chairman Ali Rashid told The Kurdish Globe, “This decision is very important and represents good news for the people of Koya. It is an achievement of the Kurdistan Regional Government and a testament to the government’s loyalty and concern for the city.”

He continued, “This decision will usher the city into a new phase of revival. More services must be implemented in this area, and there should be no obstacles in serving the people of Taq Taq.”
