In an interview with Shams channel, President Masoud Barzani discussed key issues, including developments in Syria, Kurdish unity, the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) electoral victory, and the urgency of forming a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
On Syria and Kurdish Unity:
Barzani emphasized the need for Syrian Kurds to unite internally and collectively present their demands to Damascus. He urged dialogue with Syria’s new leadership, advocating for recognition of Kurdish rights through peaceful means. Highlighting the challenges posed by the PKK’s presence in Syria and Turkish interventions, he called on Kurdish forces to act independently and prioritize unity. Barzani endorsed federalism as a framework for equitable governance in Syria, stressing it as an alternative to oppression and a means to ensure rights for all societal components.
Barzani also reflected on his meeting with Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, advising him to maintain hope, unify Kurdish discourse, and resist external interference. He reiterated that Kurdish unity strengthens the community and prevents lost opportunities, emphasizing collaboration without violence.
On the KDP’s Electoral Success:
Barzani celebrated the KDP’s recent parliamentary victory, securing 39 seats despite opposition efforts to undermine the party. He dismissed allegations of electoral manipulation, citing oversight by Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court, international observers, and the UN. He stated that if votes from Kirkuk and Mosul were counted, the KDP’s total votes would exceed one million, cementing its position as Iraq’s leading party.
Government Formation:
Barzani urged the swift formation of the KRG within two months, stressing inclusivity based on electoral merit. He reported progress in negotiations with parties, including the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and called for cooperation for the national interest.
Final Remarks:
Barzani underscored the importance of goodwill in resolving disputes and reaffirmed his commitment to Kurdish unity and justice. Expressing his affection for Qamishlo and the Syrian Kurdish community, he pledged to continue fostering peace, unity, and equitable solutions for Kurds across all regions.
