Leaders discuss peace, regional stability,
and humanitarian support for the Kurdistan Region

President Masoud Barzani was warmly received by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV during an official visit to the Vatican. The meeting provided an opportunity for both leaders to exchange views on pressing regional and global issues, with a shared hope for worldwide peace, stability, and an end to the suffering of peoples. The visit concluded with a gift exchange between the two dignitaries.
During his stay, President Barzani also met with Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, who praised Barzani’s role in promoting coexistence, security, and stability in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. The discussions touched on the political situation in Iraq, regional developments, and emerging threats, particularly in Syria and Western Kurdistan (Rojava). The leaders also explored ways to strengthen the relationship between the Kurdistan Region and the Vatican.
In a press conference, President Barzani highlighted the importance of international support, noting that his presence at the Vatican reflected global concern for the region. He stressed the need for coordinated action to address threats from ISIS militants escaping prisons in northeastern Syria, calling for joint planning and cooperation.
On Syria, Barzani confirmed he spoke with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharh, urging that military clashes not escalate into conflict between Kurds and Arabs, emphasizing dialogue as the path to resolving disputes.
The Vatican visit underscored the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to dialogue, peace, and international collaboration in addressing regional crises and promoting humanitarian solutions.
