President Masoud Barzani’s visit to Cizre in Turkey’s Sirnak province in northern Kurdistan, and his participation in the Fourth International Symposium on Mullah Jaziri was a historic and very important event that had profound implications for the Kurdish-Turkish political and cultural scene. This visit was not only a participation in a cultural activity, but also a political and symbolic announcement, because, first, it embodied a strong message of spiritual and cultural unity among the parts of Kurdistan. He said that geographical boundaries cannot separate the nation and its heritage. The presence of a Kurdish leader who has regional weight in this Kurdish historical and cultural center, which represents the heart of the ancient Emirate of Botan, revives collective memory and strengthens Kurdish identity in the region.
The political significance of the visit is timely, as it coincided with the new demands for a peace process in Turkey. In his speech at the Mullah Jaziri Forum, President Barzani expressed his support for the peace process and thanked both Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Mr. Abdullah Öcalan for the positive steps, which is a wise link and a message to all parties that stability requires the participation of all. This support demonstrates the role of the Kurdistan Region as a central prototype long-standing support for the peace process were “highly appreciated,” the statement noted. It also has the potential to influence the decision-making process in Ankara to push the wheel of Peace negotiations. The warm official reception of Turkish government institutions, including the deputy interior minister, the governor and the mayor, signals a new and different phase in relations between Ankara and Erbil, which is based on common interests and security and economic cooperation, and is considered a first step towards greater openness of Turkey to the Kurdish issue through peaceful means.
From a geoeconomic point of view، the visit cannot be separated from the wider network of regional interests that link Turkey to the Kurdistan Region. Şirnak is an important crossing point and potential energy hub، and the visit coincides with the challenges facing the region’s energy corridor، including the resumption of oil exports via the Ceyhan Line. Strengthening political and security ties between the two sides، as highlighted by the visit، is a key step to ensure the stability of energy and trade corridors، giving a clear signal to international investors that the economic cooperation environment between Ankara and Erbil is strong and reliable. Through his direct visit to an important border area، Barzani reaffirmed his commitment to the strategic partnership that benefits the economies of the region and Turkey together، making economic cooperation a tool for deepening political understanding.
In spite of that, the visit was not without controversial results, especially scenes in which a number of Barzani (Peshmerga) bodyguards were shown in military uniforms and automatic rifles. These images provoked angry reactions from some of Turkey’s ultra-nationalist factions, particularly the head of the National Movement Party(MHP), Devlet Bahçeli, who harshly criticized it as a “violation of sovereignty rights.” This unexpected response led to a formal investigation by the Turkish Interior Ministry and the publication of a statement by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) that exposed the sensitivity of the Kurdish case and the fragility surrounding peace and reconciliation efforts. Despite the side tensions, the visit is a qualitative change in content؛ it not only strengthened the legacy of Kurdish Sufism but also opened a window of hope for an inclusive dialogue and lasting peace in the region, emphasizing the role of Barzani’s leadership as a peacemaker that transcends geography.
