Prime Minister Barzani courts global investment and security partnerships at Davos

DAVOS, Switzerland– Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani concluded an intensive five-day diplomatic mission at the World Economic Forum’s 56th Annual Meeting, conducting over 20 high-level meetings aimed at positioning the Kurdistan Region as a stable investment destination amid Middle Eastern turbulence.

Economic Diversification Takes Center Stage

From January 19 to 23, Barzani led a carefully assembled delegation that included 20 private-sector investors from diverse industries, signaling the KRG’s commitment to fusing diplomatic outreach with concrete deal-making. Dr. Mohammed Shukri, Chairman of the Kurdistan Region Investment Board, emphasized the strategic decision to bring business leaders directly to global decision-makers, showcasing the region’s economic potential beyond traditional hydrocarbon sectors.
The prime minister reopened Kurdistan House upon arrival, declaring the region “ready for investment, dialogue, and partnership.” The venue hosted daily panels on innovation, artificial intelligence, industry, and education throughout the forum, drawing international participants to discuss global partnerships. Political analysts described the forum as an ideal platform to “attract investment and showcase the Region’s stability and diversification.”
Day two featured intensive economic engagement, including a dinner reception hosted by the Kar Group, a prominent Kurdish energy firm, where Barzani championed investment opportunities spanning oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, and technology. Meetings with business leaders from the Netherlands and other European nations explored potential collaborations in infrastructure and sustainable development, with observers noting this as a “golden opportunity” to highlight Kurdistan’s diversification efforts.

Regional Security and Humanitarian Advocacy

Barzani’s packed schedule reflected Kurdistan’s complex geopolitical priorities. On the first day, he met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on humanitarian concerns, followed by discussions with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot. The conversation underscored France’s support for Iraq’s stability and the Kurdistan Region’s role in regional security.
A recurring theme throughout the visit was the situation in Syria, particularly the rights and security of Syrian Kurds. Barzani held high-level talks pressing for international support to address humanitarian crises and promote stability, aligning with broader WEF dialogues on conflict resolution and post-conflict economic recovery.
The prime minister also engaged with Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General on economic cooperation and shared interests in energy and trade, while meetings with Bahraini officials, including Minister Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa representing King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, explored bilateral economic ties.
By the visit’s conclusion on January 23, Barzani noted that the Kurdistan Region departed Davos with “stronger partnerships,” having advanced coordination on security, rights, and investment. The delegation’s social media presence amplified the visit’s reach, with continuous updates highlighting meetings with presidents, ministers, and corporate executives.
The implications extend beyond the Swiss Alps. By integrating investors into the delegation, the KRG signaled a shift toward private-sector-led growth, potentially unlocking significant foreign capital. However, questions remain whether these high-profile engagements will translate into tangible projects amid ongoing disputes with Baghdad over oil revenues and federal budgets. Supporters argue KRG’s proactive stance enhances Kurdistan’s international leverage, fostering resilience in an uncertain region and demonstrating how subnational entities can maintain significant global presence despite geopolitical challenges.
