Sheikh Mohammed al-Khal: A pioneer of Kurdish language and culture

Sulaymaniyah – The Kurdish language, known for its richness and diversity, owes much of its preservation and study to pioneering scholars like Sheikh Mohammed al-Khal. Renowned for compiling the comprehensive “Khal Dictionary,” Sheikh Mohammed al-Khal played a vital role in documenting and enriching Kurdish vocabulary, grammar, and literature.
Born on January 1, 1904, in Sulaymaniyah, Sheikh Mohammed al-Khal hailed from a respected family with deep cultural roots linked to Mulla Mustafa Mufti of the Babans. His early education was guided by his grandfather and several prominent religious scholars, laying the foundation for his lifelong dedication to Kurdish intellectualism.
At 27, he began his literary career, focusing on compiling his famous dictionary while simultaneously teaching and producing works on Kurdish grammar and literature. In 1938, he transitioned to a judicial career, serving as a judge in Halabja, Sulaymaniyah, Kirkuk, and Mosul, earning a reputation as one of the most respected judges of his time.
Sheikh Mohammed al-Khal’s influence extended beyond law and literature. In 1953, he became a member of the Iraqi Academy of Sciences and later served as vice president of the Kurdish Academy of Sciences from 1972. His contributions in these institutions further solidified his legacy as a leading Kurdish intellectual.
He passed away on July 15, 1989, leaving behind a profound legacy that includes over 40 scholarly books covering Kurdish language, culture, and literature. His Khal Dictionary, published in three volumes between 1960 and 1976 in Sulaymaniyah, remains an authoritative resource with over a thousand pages of Kurdish vocabulary.
In addition to his linguistic achievements, Sheikh Mohammed al-Khal authored a Quranic commentary and compiled a significant collection of over 3,800 ancient Kurdish proverbs, preserving the cultural wisdom and moral heritage of Kurdish society.
His scholarly work also includes two notable Arabic books focusing on important Kurdish figures: Sheikh Ma’ruf al-Nudahi and Al-Mufti al-Zahawi.
Sheikh Mohammed al-Khal’s life and work continue to inspire Kurdish scholars and lovers of Kurdish culture worldwide.
