Statue unveiled in honor of Dr. Kamal Ghambar in Koya

In a heartfelt tribute to one of Kurdistan’s most respected literary figures, a statue of Dr. Kamal Ghambar was unveiled at the Koya city library, honoring his lifelong contributions to literature, criticism, and Kurdish culture.
Dr. Kamal Ghambar—a name well-known among Kurdish readers, writers, and researchers—left a lasting legacy through his extensive work in literature, philosophy, and translation. His critical writings have become essential references in Kurdish literary circles, earning him a prominent place in the Kurdish library.
The statue project was initiated by writer and poet Aram Salih, sculpted by artist Nizar, and funded by intellectual and writer Hawar Haji. The unveiling ceremony was marked by admiration and respect for Dr. Ghambar’s influential role in Kurdish cultural life.
A voice of wisdom and thought
Beyond his academic and literary achievements, Dr. Ghambar was known for his thoughtful reflections on life and humanity. His words continue to resonate, especially among young generations. “If you know your weakness, you are strong,” he once said. “Thinking is easy, working is difficult. Implementing thoughts is hard and challenging work.”
His writings emphasize values such as knowledge, freedom, and love—qualities he believed were central to human beauty and strength.
A life of dedication
Born in the Bayzagha neighborhood of Koya in 1937, Kamal Ghambar began his education in 1944 and later graduated from the Arabic Language and Literature Department at Baghdad University in 1962. He continued his academic journey, earning a master’s degree in literary criticism in 2008 and a doctorate in Arabic Language Philosophy in 2013.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ghambar worked in various educational and governmental roles, eventually retiring as an educational advisor in the Council of Ministers in 2006. He was also an active member of the Kurdish Writers’ Union in Erbil and published numerous books and articles, many of which focused on literary criticism and translation.
Dr. Ghambar passed away on December 30, 2024, at the age of 87. He is remembered not only for his intellect but for his deep love of Kurdish culture and his tireless efforts to enrich it.
