The cornerstone of Iraq’s upcoming elections

By | Dr. Nazaket Hussen

As Iraq prepares for the upcoming parliamentary elections next month, the nation once again stands at a defining moment in its democratic journey. The election of the Iraqi Council of Representatives will lay the foundation for the next government—making stability a crucial prerequisite for success.
To ensure a fair and peaceful process, Iraq needs both internal cooperation and external support. International organizations and observer nations can play a vital role in safeguarding the transparency and legitimacy of the elections. Their involvement would help strengthen Iraq’s democratic institutions and reinforce the principles of coexistence—turning the election into a source of stability rather than division.
Iraq’s recent history provides a clear lesson: every election conducted on time and within a stable environment has helped the country avoid legal and political vacuums. Each cycle has gradually improved the nation’s governance and reduced internal tensions.
As Iraq moves toward this new stage, cooperation among all political forces—the Parliament, government, Presidency, and political parties—is essential. They must act responsibly to prevent provocations, maintain calm, and protect the democratic process.
Failure to hold timely and credible elections would risk pushing Iraq back into instability. Conversely, a successful election can serve as a powerful catalyst for national peace, unity, and political progress. Stability, therefore, is not just desirable—it is indispensable for Iraq’s democratic future.
