The current situation in Rojava and its impact on Kurdistan Region

By Larisa Mohammed

In recent years, Western Kurdistan has become one of the hotspots in the Middle East, where the interests of regional and international powers intersect. The region where the Kurds were able to start a new experience of self-government is now in a new and decisive phase. The shifting balance of power in Syria, the weakening of U.S. support, the growing influence of Turkey and Qatar, and Israeli intervention have all put the future of the Kurds in the region in jeopardy. This article discusses these changes and their impact on the wider community.
The relationship between the United States and the Syrian Democratic Army, which was initially founded on the basis of the war against ISIS, has undergone significant changes in recent years. The U.S . initially supported the military and logistical support of the SDF and became a strategic ally in the fight against the resurgence of terrorist movements, but with the changing political situation. In the wake of the Turkish invasion of Ukraine and the Middle East, this has led to a decline in the number of refugees in the region.
Turkey, one of the most anti-Kurdish parties in the West, has been trying to weaken Kurdish power. Ankara has launched three major military offensives in Western Kurdistan, Afrin, Sreekani and Gerspi. With the advent of the Assad government, Turkey’s role in Syria has become stronger and it is trying to shape the new Syrian administration in accordance with its own interests through the support of armed opposition groups. Qatar,a close ally of Turkey, provides financial and political support to the SunniIslamists and is trying to increase its role in the formation of the new Syrian government.
On the other hand, Israel has been actively benefiting from the developments in Syria and has repeatedly abandoned its military objectives inside Syria in order to weaken the forces of Iran and Hezbollah. Concerned about the emergence of new threats from the northern borders, Israel is engaged in military andintelligence activities to protect its securityinterests.
In this complex situation, the agreement between Mazloum al-Abdi as commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Ahmed al-Sharaa as head of the new Syrian administration is of particular importance. The U.S.-brokered negotiations are aimed at determining the Kurdish status in Syria’s future structure, but the main problem is how much these agreements can withstand pressure and pressure. The Turkish Cypriots and the armed groups behind them are being held accountable.
The impact of this situation on the whole of Kurdistan is profound, because the future of theWest is directly linked to the housing of regional and international forces. The weakening of U.S. support, the strengthening of Turkey’s role, and the lack of the Kurds’ placein the new Syrian political system are all direct blackmails to the Kurds’ achievements andcould have a negative impact on the stability of the country parts of the Kurdistan.
As a result, these political and security tensions will have a direct impact on the Kurdistan Region. Therefore, the region’s leaders are watching these developments carefully and have launched active diplomatic efforts to protect national interests and provide international support. President Masoud Barzani, through his visits to Italy and the Vatican, has sought to strengthen the region’s ties with Europe and to raise global awareness of the dangers of instability in Iraq. By attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Masrour Barzani seized an important opportunity to present the region as a reliable ally and a stable investment in a region full of complexity. These diplomatic efforts are a clear indication that the region’s leaders understand that the deterioration of the situation in Iraq and the strengthening of the government’s rural forces, therefore the region needs to demonstrate its proactivity at the international level and provide additional political and economic support.
