The Kurdistan Region: The Center of Balance and Stability in the Middle East

Frsat Saeed Shkur

The Middle East, as a region fraught with crises and complex geopolitical conflicts, has always needed a rational and astute actor to maintain balances. In this strategic equation, the Kurdistan Region has practically proven that it is the key to solutions and a fundamental pillar of stability at both regional and global levels. The Region’s strong standing, deeply rooted politically, economically, diplomatically, and securely, has compelled international and regional countries to view this robust position with imperative importance and deal with it as a reliable partner.
Politically and legally, the nature of the Kurdistan Region’s entity is entirely distinct from other parts of Kurdistan, possessing a unique status. This entity is enshrined within the permanent constitution of Iraq, granting it international legitimacy and legal sovereignty. As political scientist David Romano points out in his analyses of Kurdish foreign policy, the Kurdistan Region has successfully transitioned its position from a “Survival Strategy” phase to the phase of a sovereign and “Proactive Diplomatic Actor”. This constitutional recognition has resulted in countries treating Erbil in a formal, state-like manner. Because of this legitimacy, the Kurdistan Region has become an official hub for international relations, hosting consulates and global representations, which has created significant political immunity for it.
In the current sensitive situation, the issue of the withdrawal of US and Coalition military forces from Iraq has become a topic of discussion in political circles. Some analysts mistakenly believe that with the withdrawal of these forces, the Kurdistan Region’s position will weaken. However, the geopolitical reality is quite the opposite. Within the framework of the “Structural Realism” theory formulated by Kenneth Waltz, the Kurdistan Region has very astutely adapted itself to the complex international system, building its alliances on the basis of “Mutual Interdependence” and shared interests, rather than solely relying on foreign military power. That is, the Region’s relations with Washington and European countries now encompass broad dimensions of economy, energy, and national security, having reached an institutional level that will not collapse due to a military withdrawal.
In terms of security and maintaining stability, the Kurdistan Region is the golden guarantor of regional security. The experience of defeating the ISIS terrorist organization proved that the Peshmerga is an internationally trusted force in confronting global threats. Global powers, the Iraqi government, and even regional countries clearly understand the reality that weakening the Kurdistan Region’s standing equates to creating a massive “Security Vacuum” and the spread of chaos, which would ultimately drive the region into a difficult and destructive phase that would be impossible to control. Therefore, safeguarding the entity of the Region is not merely a Kurdish interest, but rather an international necessity to prevent the security collapse of Iraq.
Simultaneously, in economic terms, the Region has become a vital international trade gateway, a stable source for ensuring energy security, and a magnet for foreign investment. In terms of peace and coexistence, the Kurdistan Region has presented a modern and unique model, serving as a safe haven for all diverse religious and ethnic communities, as well as hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees. This “Soft Power” has solidified the Region’s moral and political standing before the international community.
In conclusion, the Kurdistan Region is an unalterable geopolitical reality and an entity built on the foundations of law, institutions, and supreme interests. Decision-makers in the international community have reached the profound conviction that without a strong, stable, and effective Kurdistan Region, achieving peace and guaranteeing security in the Middle East is an empty illusion. Contrary to fears, the legal and political nature of the Region ensures that even during major military shifts, such as troop withdrawals, Kurdistan will remain an iron shield, because in reality, it is the key to solutions and the center of decision-making for the future of the Middle East.
