The tourism sector is emerging as a key driver of economic development in the Kurdistan Region, with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) launching new projects aimed at expanding tourism infrastructure and attracting investment.
As part of this strategy, two major tourist cities will be established in Duhok Governorate, one around Duhok Dam and the other on Mount Zawa. The projects are expected to transform the region’s tourism landscape, create thousands of employment opportunities, and contribute to economic diversification.
According to the KRG’s new service project plan, comprehensive master plans have been prepared for both areas, introducing a modern tourism model beyond traditional hotels and recreational facilities. The projects are designed as fully integrated tourist cities, including accommodation, entertainment, shopping centers, natural attractions, and family recreation areas.
The developments are expected to be completed within three to six years and are viewed as long-term economic projects that can strengthen the tourism sector and provide a sustainable source of income for the Region.
For years, tourism in the Kurdistan Region relied mainly on smaller-scale projects that struggled to meet the growing number of visitors. The new initiatives represent a shift toward large-scale investments designed to compete with international tourism destinations.
The Mount Zawa and Duhok Dam projects are being developed under the supervision and follow-up of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The KRG considers them strategic projects aimed at boosting tourism, diversifying revenue sources, and attracting both domestic and international visitors.
The master plans provide opportunities for investors to participate in different sectors of the projects. Planned developments include international and local restaurants, luxury hotels, motels, private tourist complexes, sports facilities, family entertainment areas, and water parks.
The projects have been divided into multiple zones and components, allowing investors to implement different sections according to their expertise and financial capacity.
With their natural landscapes and strategic locations, the two tourist cities are expected to become major destinations in the Kurdistan Region, supporting economic growth and creating new opportunities for the local community.
