University of Sulaymaniyah women win Iraqi handball title

The University of Sulaymaniyah women’s handball team has won the Iraqi Women’s Handball League championship for the first time after defeating Kufa 21-15 in the final match of the 2025-26 season.
The second and final phase of the league concluded in July at the Hall of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Sulaymaniyah, with seven teams competing.
The University of Sulaymaniyah finished first in the standings to claim the title, while Kufa placed second and Al-Karkh third. The team secured the championship in the decisive round with a strong performance against Kufa.
During the final phase, the champions also recorded victories over Al-Turath University and Shahraban, demonstrating their strength throughout the competition.
The league was played in a single round-robin format, with the opening rounds held in Baghdad and the final rounds hosted in Sulaymaniyah.
The historic victory represents a major achievement for the University of Sulaymaniyah’s women’s handball program and reflects the growing progress of women’s sports in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
