Young Kurdish-Swedish boxer wins gold

Farida Hussein, an 11-year-old talent from Umeå, claims first place in her weight category at the 2026 Swedish Youth Boxing Championship, marking a remarkable debut in the national tournament

Farida Gunnes Tegstrom, known as Farida Hussein, a young Kurdish-Swedish boxer, captured the gold medal in her first appearance at the 2026 Swedish Youth Boxing Championship (Diploma) for boys and girls. The tournament was held on February 14–15 at the Hörs Camp Sports Center in the town of Hör, Sweden.
Competing in the 63 kg category, the 11-year-old athlete, representing Umeå Boxing Club, secured first place on the final day of the championship. Her victory drew praise from the Swedish-Kurdish boxing community, highlighting her skill and potential.
Bêrîvan Hassan, a Kurdish female boxer based in Sweden, described Farida as a rising talent with a bright future. “She is highly intelligent in the ring, with a unique and surprising style that consistently puts pressure on her opponents and creates real danger during bouts,” Hassan said.
Farida, who lives in Umeå, Sweden, holds Swedish citizenship and began boxing in 2025 at the age of 10, following in her father’s footsteps. She trains under his guidance and is an active member of Umeå Boxing Club.
Her gold medal win is a remarkable achievement for an athlete so early in her career and underscores the growing presence of Kurdish talent in Swedish sports.
