The Kurdistan Region as a National Gathering Center for Kurds in Other Parts of Kurdistan

By Tahseen Wsu Abdullah

As an influential party, the Kurdistan Region has always viewed the Kurdish issue from the perspective that national interests can be achieved through peace and dialogue rather than through war, armed conflict and rigid mechanisms. This view stems from the fact that the Kurdistan Region has achieved great gains in Iraq through dialogue and negotiations within the framework of the constitution, an experience that can be used by other parts of Kurdistan, especially in Syria.
In recent weeks, the Kurdish issue in West Kurdistan or northeastern Syria has attracted the attention of the entire world, causing many media and political attention. In this context, the Kurdistan Region played an unprecedented role as an important center for West Kurdistan, both at the level of the political leadership and the Kurdistan Regional Government, and at the level of the masses.
The states into which Kurdistan has been divided have seen the Kurdistan Region as a threat, because they believe that this will be an experience for the Kurds in those states to follow. In other words, the states that have divided Kurdistan have tried to tell the Kurds that this is their fate by surrounding the Kurdistan Region, whether through threats or attacks, or by showing a bad picture of this experience. This discourse and view has always been seen as the dominant view towards the Kurdistan Region.
On the other hand, the Kurdistan Region has strategically worked to nullify this view, so that not only the military mechanism as a means of resolving the Kurdish issue, but on the contrary, dialogue and peace as a solution strategy. This has been clearly presented to these states by the political authorities in the Kurdistan Region at the highest level. Therefore, the Kurdistan Region has been able to overcome the security and military space that the states divided Kurdistan had against the Kurdistan Region.
In the West Kurdistan issue, the Kurdistan Region has been seen as a decisive center, both as a helpful factor in overcoming this situation and creating the conditions for a new situation in which the Kurds as a nation can defend their survival within the new reality in Syria.
From the very beginning of the events, the political leadership of the Kurdistan Region in general, and President Massoud Barzani in particular, were very concerned that this complication would not escalate. Although the opponents of the Kurdish entity in northeastern Syria, whether domestically, regionally or internationally, had much more conspiracy than is currently seen, the Kurdistan Region played an important role in preventing this conspiracy from succeeding.
President Massoud Barzani made serious efforts at the international level and made every effort to protect the Kurds as a nation. He was constantly on the line with the government authorities in Syria and lobbied internationally to prevent the massive conspiracy against the Western Kurds.
In West Kurdistan, whether at the political and military level, or at the popular level, this solidarity of the Kurdistan Region has always been appreciated and emphasized that the Kurdistan Region as the only serious party in trouble with West Kurdistan.
