President Barzani initiative offers hope for political progress

Political parties respond positively to calls for dialogue, parliamentary reactivation, and government formation.

A new initiative by Masoud Barzani has raised hopes of ending the political deadlock that has delayed the formation of a new government in the Kurdistan Region since the parliamentary elections nearly two years ago.
In a message issued during Eid al-Adha, Barzani called on political parties to put the interests of the people above partisan considerations and work together to resolve ongoing disputes. He urged political leaders to meet after the holiday with sincerity and a sense of responsibility to overcome the current impasse and move the Region forward.
The initiative was widely welcomed by political parties and public figures, many of whom described it as an important opportunity to restart dialogue and strengthen political cooperation. Supporters hope the effort will lead to the reactivation of the Kurdistan Parliament and the formation of the Region’s tenth cabinet.
Officials from the Kurdistan Democratic Party said the initiative requires practical action and confirmed their readiness to resume discussions with other parties, including the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. They stressed that public interests must take priority over political differences.
Political observers have also emphasized the need for unity among Kurdish parties, arguing that cooperation is essential to preserving the Region’s achievements and addressing current political and economic challenges.
The Kurdistan parliamentary elections held on October 20, 2024, resulted in the KDP winning 39 seats, followed by the PUK with 23 seats. Other parties, including New Generation, the Kurdistan Islamic Union, Halwest, and the Kurdistan Justice Group, also secured representation in the 100-seat parliament.
Despite the election results, efforts to form a new government have remained stalled. President Barzani’s initiative is now seen as a significant opportunity to break the deadlock and establish a path toward greater political stability and cooperation in the Kurdistan Region.
