110 textbooks and curricula revised, while 236 new schools and kindergartens have been built
The new 2026–2027 academic year has begun across the Kurdistan Region, with more than 1.75 million students returning to schools across the region.
Dr. Alan Hama Said, Minister of Education of the Kurdistan Regional Government, announced details of the preparations for the new academic year, including student and staff numbers, textbook production, curriculum revisions, and educational infrastructure projects.
According to the Minister of Education, 7,590 schools across the Kurdistan Region will welcome students this academic year, with more than 1.75 million students beginning their studies.
Dr. Alan Hama Said said more than 123,000 students will enter the first grade of primary school for the first time.
He also said the educational process this year will be overseen by 137,516 teachers and 31,219 administrative employees.
The minister said nearly 19 million new textbooks have been prepared for the 2026–2027 academic year.
He added that 110 textbooks and curricula have been revised to update their content. The revisions were prepared by experts and teachers affiliated with the Ministry of Education.
The revised materials include the sixth-grade primary Kurdish language textbook; science for grades six, eight and nine; mathematics for grades four, five, six and 11; 11th-grade chemistry; and information technology for grades seven and eight, along with several other subjects.
The Minister of Education also highlighted the development of educational infrastructure during the Ninth Cabinet.
He said 236 new schools and kindergartens have been built during the cabinet’s term, while 476 new classrooms have been added to existing schools.
In addition, 2,650 schools have been renovated to improve the learning environment.
The minister also noted the importance that KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani places on educational institutions.
The new academic year comes as the Kurdistan Region’s education sector continues to serve more than 1.75 million students through thousands of schools, supported by more than 137,000 teachers and 31,000 administrative employees.
